“Amalanga Awafani” Drops Without Credit to Samthing Soweto

After months of anticipation, the track “Amalanga Awafani” was finally released on streaming platforms on Tuesday. However, there was a significant issue: while everyone featured on the song, including DJ Maphorisa and TO Starquality, received credit, vocalist Samthing Soweto was left out.

When news of the release broke, Samthing Soweto responded with a heartbroken emoji on social media. His subtle reaction quickly ignited a fan-fueled online war, with supporters rallying to defend him, accusing Maphorisa of exploiting the singer by not giving him the recognition he deserved.

As the backlash mounted, DJ Maphorisa took to Instagram Live to air his frustrations. He accused Samthing Soweto of delaying the song’s release with numerous demands and explained why they decided to drop the track without crediting him. However, after a day of intense online criticism, Samthing Soweto was eventually added to the song’s credits alongside Mas Musiq and Lawd Weezy.

Shebeshxt Takes Aim at DJ Maphorisa Amid Samthing Soweto Drama

In the midst of the drama, rapper Shebeshxt appeared to take shots at DJ Maphorisa on his X (formerly Twitter) account. He suggested that it might be time to “cancel Phori,” stating,

“DJ Maphorisa keeps showing us he’s the real villain but we ignore it because we like his music. At some point we need to cancel him.”

However, not everyone believed Shebeshxt wrote the post himself, with many social media users questioning the level of English used. Some even went so far as to suggest cancelling Shebeshxt instead. Here’s how South Africans reacted:

@ministerTP__:

I know Shebe didn’t write this😭😂

@MetroHetero:

@peezet__ responded:
