Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has confirmed significant progress in the investigation of the unfortunate hijacking and loss of life involving Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs after a total of six suspects have been arrested in relation to Luke Fleurs’ death.

The incident that led to Luke Fleurs’ death

The incident unfolded as the 24-year-old PSL athlete was tragically shot and killed during a violent altercation at a petrol station in Honeydew, occurring precisely on Wednesday, 03 April around 20h30.

Initial reports indicate that Fleurs, behind the wheel of a red VW Golf 8 GTI, was awaiting service at the fueling station situated on 14th Avenue. It was at this juncture that he was confronted by two assailants, both armed.

These perpetrators, driving a white BMW 1 series, aggressively brandished their firearms, coercing Fleurs out of his vehicle before ruthlessly firing a fatal shot, targeting his upper body.

Subsequently, one of the assailants absconded with Fleurs’ automobile while the other trailed behind in the BMW. Despite swift efforts to provide medical assistance, Fleurs was declared deceased upon arrival at the nearest healthcare facility.

Six suspects arrested for Luke Fleurs’ death

A dedicated investigative team under the command of Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni successfully traced the six suspects to Slovoville, Soweto, in the early hours of Wednesday, 10 April.

Although Fleurs’ vehicle was recovered on Monday, 08 April, it had already been stripped of its valuables. Authorities suspect the arrested individuals to be linked to a broader syndicate responsible for a string of car hijackings in the Gauteng region, and investigations to locate additional suspects are ongoing.

The six apprehended suspects are slated to appear before the Roodepoort Magistrates Court on Friday, 12 April, where legal proceedings will commence.

Meanwhile, a commemorative service honouring the life of the talented footballer is scheduled to be held on Thursday, 11 April, at the FNB Stadium.
