In a sad development, South African top jazz musician and songwriter Thapelo Joseph Mofokeng has died.

Thapelo Joseph Mofokeng passed away on the 21st of January 2024. He was 74 years old.

Family Confirms Thapelo Mofokeng’s Death

Thapelo Mofokeng’s family confirmed his death in an official statement that was seen by the Daily Sun.

“On behalf of the Mofokeng family, we would like to sadly announce the passing of the legendary artist Mr Thapelo Joseph Mofokeng on 21st January 2023. This is a difficult moment time for the family, and we are still processing everything,” read the statement.

Thapelo Mofokeng’s family has not yet revealed the cause of his death. They are set to release more details about his death and funeral arrangements.

Thapelo Mofokeng’s sudden untimely death has thronged Mzansi into mourning. His death has left a huge gap in the jazz music industry.

Mofokeng was regarded by many as South Africa’s number-one jazz and blues cabaret artist. His music career spanned over 30 years. He has brushed shoulders with great US actors and musicians like Bill Cosby, Sammy Davis Jr, Redd Foxx and Count Basie, to name just a few.

Another Celebrity Death

Thapelo Mofokeng’s death comes barely a week after another South African musician passed away.

South African gospel musician Kenny Makweng died on the 16th of January 2024. He passed away barely weeks after suffering a debilitating stroke.

Kenny Makweng suffered a stroke in the latter part of December 2023 year and was admitted to the intensive care unit. He also experienced complications in his brain.

Two weeks before his passing, insiders close to Kenny Makweng informed the media that his condition had reached a critical point, with doctors advising the family to be prepared for any outcome.

Reportedly, he showed no response to treatment, and his health deteriorated to the extent that only his family had permission to visit him in the hospital after his admission.
