Excited to Be in My Father’s Land

Upon landing in Nigeria, the 23-year-old model expressed her enthusiasm about being back in the country after 20 years.

I’m excited I’m in my father’s land and I want to get to experience more about it. It’s been 20 years since I’ve been here. I just want to get to know more about the culture and where I come from,” Adetshina shared in a video statement.

Adetshina’s participation in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant follows intense scrutiny over her South African citizenship.

My goal is obviously to win the crown of Miss Universe Nigeria, and I do have an impact that I want to share with everybody. As a woman who has obviously faced adversity, I want to use my story to bring people together,” she said.

Invited Amidst Citizenship Controversy

The invitation for Adetshina to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria came after questions were raised about her citizenship in South Africa. The controversy began when the Department of Home Affairs disclosed allegations of fraud and identity theft involving Adetshina’s mother, leading to public outrage and calls for Adetshina to stay in Nigeria.

In her statement last week, Adetshina confirmed her participation in the Nigerian pageant, saying,

I have received an invitation from the Silverbird Group, who are the organizers of the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, to participate in Miss Universe Nigeria 2024. I say this with great excitement because I have decided to accept this invitation.”

South Africans Express Outrage

However, a video of her in Nigeria has triggered outrage on social media. South Africans argued that she should not have been allowed to travel to Nigeria and that her travelling documents should have been confisticated.

They argued that she should stay in Nigeria and not return to South Africa.
