Teen Hero Stops Bus, Rescuing 50 Lives as Driver Collapses in Wild Twist

A 13-year-old teen is being hailed as a hero for his quick actions, saving the lives of more than 50 people aboard a school bus when the driver suddenly collapsed

Augustine Nii Odoi Laryea, a student at Carefield School Complex in Bawjiase, located in the Central Region of Ghana, acted on instinct when he stepped in to hit the brakes after the driver collapsed behind the wheel.

How the 13-Year-Old Teen Stepped Up During the Bus Crisis

The incident, which took place last month but gained attention recently on local TV station Onua TV, showcased Augustine’s bravery on their morning program.

According to Augustine, he was sitting near the driver when he noticed the bus swerving erratically, heading towards a dangerous pit beneath a construction zone on a bridge.

Spotting the driver foaming at the mouth and unconscious, Augustine sprang into action. With no hesitation, he grabbed the steering wheel, hit the brakes, and brought the bus to a stop. He then alerted the other passengers and called for help.

While the driver was rushed to the hospital, he sadly passed away. The bus, carrying around 50 individuals including students, teachers, and a caterer, was returning from school.

Despite having no prior driving experience, Augustine’s courage and instincts prevailed. Fearful but resolute, he understood the urgency to save everyone on board.

 

Praise For Augustine

Augustine’s heroic act has garnered praise and respect from both his school and community. His headmaster, Mr Samuel Ofori, expressed his pride in the student, praising his bravery and intelligence.

He announced plans to award Augustine a scholarship and medal in recognition of his valour, even nominating him for a national award.

Augustine’s parents, Mr and Mrs Laryea, expressed their gratitude for their son’s life and remarkable deed, conveying both surprise and pride in his actions.

Augustine shared his mixed emotions, being glad that he saved numerous lives but saddened by the driver’s passing. He hopes his story will inspire other children to be brave and helpful during emergencies. His aspiration to become a doctor in the future is fueled by the desire to save even more lives.
