The ongoing Thabo Bester saga recently took an unexpected twist after his newly appointed legal representative, Advocate Tsoeunyane Jeremiah Pela, questioned the true identity of the man currently incarcerated at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre, whether he is indeed the convicted rapist and murderer.
It has come to public knowledge following the arrest of Thabo Bester that he is not registered with the Department of Home Affairs.
Following the initial reports by Minister of Home Affairs Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, which indicated that Thabo Bester, although born in South Africa, is not registered with the Department of Home Affairs, Bester’s legal team seems fully prepared to vigorously contest the court regarding Bester’s identity.
The confusion surrounding Bester arises from how he managed to register at a tertiary institution (Damelin), open a bank account, purchase vehicles, and obtain a driving license without possessing a valid South African Identity Document.

Following Bester’s virtual court appearance, during which his legal team suggested that the individual incarcerated at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre might be someone other than Bester, the Department of Home Affairs has provided reassurance to the public.
They have stated that DNA tests were conducted when Bester was previously deported, and the results confirmed a match between his DNA and that of his mother, solidifying his identity.
