‘Thank you, Lord’ Kelly Khumalo On Scooping Basadi Music Award
Despite facing backlash from the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, Kelly Khumalo emerged victorious at the Basadi in Music Awards on Saturday, 12 August. The singer won the Afro Pop Artist of The Year award at the second annual event, which honors women in the music and entertainment industry.
On her social media, Kelly expressed her gratitude to her fans, writing “Thank you BoMakhi we did it!”

Cancel Culture called on Kelly Khumalo
Kelly Khumalo has been subject to cancel culture following revelations from witnesses at the Meyiwa murder trial, which began anew in July. The Ngathwala Ngaye singer was dating the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper when he was killed in her presence at her mother’s house in Vosloorus on 26 October 2014.
There were six adults present on that fateful night, including Kelly, her mother Ntombi Khumalo, her sister Zandie, Zandie’s boyfriend Longwe Thwala, the late player’s friends Mthokozisi Thwala and Tumelo Madlala, as well as Kelly’s two children.
After testimony from Colonel Lambertus Steyn, a data analyst and investigation officer at the South African Police Services (SAPS) Cold Case Unit, calls for Kelly to be cancelled grew. As a result, she was removed from the line-up of the Tribute To Women concert and the Maseru Jazz Festival.
Support from fans and friends
Despite this setback, Kelly continues to receive support from her fans, event organizers, and industry peers. While she lost some gigs, Rusty Rocks Events reassured patrons that she would still be performing at their All4Women Music Concert. She also received support from her friend Somizi Mhlongo who said he is standing by her and still wants her to perform at his show titled Shades of Pink at Emperors Palace in Ekurhuleni on 19 August.
