The River’s Andile Dikana Say He’s Now Comfortable With Kissing Men
It is probably one of the biggest tests in one’s acting career where you are required to portray a gay character when in real life you are straight.
This was Lunga Mofokeng’s predicament with his role as Andile Dikana on the multi-award-winning novella; The River.
Fortunately, the actor has managed to navigate the situation after he was quoted saying he’s now comfortable with kissing men on screen.
The actor who is straight in real life and was rumoured to be engaged to Housekeepers and Lithapo actress Lorraine Moropa two years ago says he took the role because his career needed a challenge.
He said in an interview: “I remember when I got the role my agent asked if I read the brief well and would be comfortable playing a gay character. I said ‘yes, why not?’”
Not only is the actor enjoying his role but he says the role educated and educates him a lot about the LGBTQI+ community.
The actor stated: “Through my role as Andile, I’ve learnt that the LGBTQI+ community are literally fighting against society for being themselves, and the fact that they actually owe no one an explanation for who they are. I am glad I play a role that teaches and changes people’s perspectives. The responses I get are amazing and people salute me for the job I do. This shows that society is starting to accept that we are all human.”
The actor who hails from Katlehong encourages everyone to participate in pride month whether they are supportive of the LGBTQI+ or not.
On The River, Lunga’s character; Andile Dikana tried to commit suicide in season one when his mother wouldn’t accept his sexuality. His mother played by the award-winning; Sindi Dlathu has since accepted him and has even welcomed Andile’s fiancé; Njabulo played by Siya Raymond Sepotokele to stay in the family’s home with them.
The River fans adore and love Lunga Mofokeng because of his brilliant portrayal as Andile on the show. Lunga is talented, emotional, and charismatic when he needs to be.
