Three pupils from Centenary Secondary School in Asherville, Durban, were rushed to the hospital on Tuesday following a violent altercation allegedly fueled by racial tensions. The incident unfolded during school hours, raising questions about student safety and the effectiveness of security measures at the institution.
Emergency Response and School Closure
The school administration swiftly issued an urgent notice to parents, informing them that classes would be dismissed early due to “circumstances that have arisen.” This announcement came after videos of the incident began circulating on social media, showing students attacking each other outside the school premises while concerned neighbours recorded the chaotic scene. Many questioned why security personnel failed to intervene in time to prevent the violence.
According to the dRK Tactical control room, three pupils sustained serious stab wounds and were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. A representative from dRK Tactical confirmed the incident, stating,
“There was a racial altercation inside the school. Three pupils were stabbed and taken to hospital. Security personnel and police responded to the scene.”

What Led to the Incident?
While the exact cause of the altercation remains unclear, witnesses suggest that it began as a verbal dispute inside the school before escalating into physical violence. By the time the fight moved outside the school grounds, tensions had boiled over, leading to the stabbing of three students.
In addition to the students involved, reports indicate that some parents also became physically engaged in the altercation, further exacerbating the situation. This has prompted calls for immediate action from the school’s governing body and local authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Community Reaction and Parental Concerns
The incident has left many parents worried about their children’s safety. A voice note from an individual claiming to have witnessed the fight urged parents to take the matter seriously and gather at the school the following day to demand answers and stronger measures to ensure student safety.
“The police were called when the fight broke out inside the school,” the witness said. “They tried to calm the situation, but it didn’t work. The children were let out, and even parents got involved, hitting some children. The governing body needs to take firm action. Parents must come together at the school tomorrow.”
School’s Response and Future Plans
Despite the violence, the school issued a statement assuring parents that classes would resume as normal on Wednesday. However, this decision has been met with mixed reactions, with some parents expressing their reluctance to send their children back to school until they receive assurances about enhanced security measures.
