Tragedy Strikes Shaka iLembe: Renowned Filmmaker & Director Teboho Mahlatsi Dies Unexpectedly
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the talented executive producer and director of Shaka iLembe, Teboho Moseling Mahlatsi, passed away on Monday, leaving behind a void that will be deeply felt.
The news of his untimely demise was confirmed by the renowned comedian and filmmaker, David Kau, who acted as the spokesperson for the grieving Mahlatsi family.

In a statement posted on his verified Twitter account, David Kau conveyed the family’s request for prayers and privacy during this difficult time of mourning.
Additionally, the family mentioned that they will provide updates on Teboho Mahlatsi’s funeral arrangements and memorial services at an appropriate time.
“It is with the saddest regret that we announce the untimely passing of Filmmaker & Producer – Teboho Moseling Mahlatsi, on the 3rd of July 2023.
In lieu of personal condolences, the family kindly requests prayers & that they be given privacy to mourn and come to terms with the tragic loss.
Further details will be communicated in due time,” the statement by the Mahlatsi family reads.
The family has not yet disclosed Teboho Mahlatsi’s cause of death.
Teboho Mahlatsi’s Other Works
Apart from his role as the executive producer of the beloved Shaka iLembe, Teboho Moseling Mahlatsi also directed several episodes of the esteemed Mzansi Magic series.
Moreover, he served as the executive producer for “Angel’s Song” and “Isibaya.”
Teboho Mahlatsi’s debut film, Portrait of a Young Man Drowning (1999), received the prestigious Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. He played a pivotal role as the co-creator and director across three seasons of the legendary South African television series, Yizo Yizo, which attained record-breaking viewership in the history of South African television. Yizo Yizo was recognized as the best international series at the Cinema Tout Ecrand Awards.
His other notable works encompass Meet South Africa. Meet Bheki: The Mbhaco Maker (2017), Shuga (2009–2012), Sekalli le Meokgo (Meokgo and the Stick Fighter) (2006), A-Z – A Commentary on Post-Apartheid South Africa (2001), Ungshaya Ding Dong (2000), and White City Black Lives (1997).
Teboho Mahlatsi was honoured with the Tribute entertainment achiever of the Year award in 2002 and received recognition for his groundbreaking contributions in the Audiovisual and Creative field at the USIBA Awards in 2018.
