The MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, Nonceba Kontsiwe, said that Potelwa was a cultural icon and a role model for many young people in the province. She said that Potelwa’s death was a huge blow to the development and promotion of indigenous languages and literature.
“The murder of Nomfusi Potelwa is appalling especially as it happens on Women’s Month- it speaks of the ill-mannered society that has no respect for the lives of women and children. She was not just a creative, but also a teacher and a community builder. We have suffered a loss as a province.”
Kontsiwe called on law enforcement agencies to work hard to ensure justice for Potelwa and her family. She also urged the public to respect and support the family during this tough time.
Potelwa’s fans and colleagues have also taken to social media to pay tribute to her and express their condolences. Many have described her as a talented, humble, and generous person who touched many lives with her words and voice.
Potelwa is survived by her three children and her mother. The details of her funeral have not been announced yet.
