Tug of War for Ka Valungu: Peta Teanet’s Children Wrestle Uncle for Legacy Dominance
The family of the late disco music legend Peta Teanet is embroiled in a dispute over the rights to his hit song, Ka Valungu, which DJ Nomza The King recently sampled.
Peta Teanet’s Children In Nasty Fight With Their Uncle Over Ka Valungu
Sunday World reports that Teanet’s children, Rise, Richie and C Boy, who are also musicians, claim that their uncle, Forsta Teanet, did not consult them before striking a deal with Tebza De DJ, who remixed their father’s song without permission.
Ka Valungu, which features Teanet’s original vocals, has become a viral sensation on social media and streaming platforms, reviving the legacy of the iconic singer who died in 1996. However, the song was initially removed from iTunes and Spotify after the Teanet family filed a complaint against Tebza De DJ for using their father’s voice illegally.
Forsta Teanet, the younger brother of the Khoma Maseve hitmaker, said he negotiated with Tebza De DJ’s management and record company to release the song as Peta Teanet’s original and credit him properly. He said he was happy with the agreement and that the song was back on streaming sites.
However, Teanet’s children said they were not aware of the deal and that they were not compensated for their father’s work.
They said they felt taken advantage of by Tebza De DJ and their uncle, who they accused of being greedy and disrespectful. They said they wanted a fair share of the royalties and recognition for their father’s contribution to the music industry.
Tebza De DJ, whose real name is Tebogo Sambo, could not be reached for comment. He has previously expressed his admiration for Peta Teanet and his intention to honour his music through the remix.
Musical Resurgence After 27 Years
Peta Teanet was a South African disco musician of Shangaan descent who released over five albums and several hit songs such as Cina Ndoda, Damage and I Love You. He was shot and killed by a policeman during an argument.
His music has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to Ka Valungu, which has topped the charts in South Africa and abroad.
