Tweeps Pour Respects As Greyhound Discontinues Operations
In a shocking development, one of South Africa’s biggest luxury and long-distance bus operators – Greyhound confirmed on Wednesday that it will close shop and remove all its buses from service on the 14th of February.
Announcing the development on Twitter Greyhound said:
”Greyhound and Citiliner are closing operations. Services will run until 14 February 2021. Passengers with tickets booked for services after this date will be refunded.”
It is not quite clear why the company has decided to close its business after 37 years in service. One can only speculate that perhaps the Covid-19 pandemic’s prolonged lockdown took its toll on the company.
Over the years Greyhound established a good reputation as an affordable and reliable long-distance luxury coach service in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.
According to the company’s statistics, its busses travel an estimated 25 kilometres each year and transported an average of 804, 293 passengers
Some of Greyhound’s loyal customers have expressed their shock and disbelief on Twitter after learning that the company will cease to exists in 11 days’ time.
Thank you for all the trips between jozi and bloem and later between jozi and CT during my student days! pic.twitter.com/Jty7xP9hmC

My first time to SA going to varsity, I used Greyhound. I would interchange with Citiliner till I finished my studies. Now to visit friends in SA would be a tall mountain as I have to choose a new bus ad get used to their service. 😢😢😢

The only bus I got on for travels and gave the best experience, rather I’m sad it had to come to this 😢 pristine reputation and diligence was the motto.

What a shame.
I have fond memories of the 17 hour Joburg-Cape Town Greyhound trips to varsity and back in the 1990s.
It’s one of the reasons I love long drives in the night.https://t.co/4ia08dQ8xa
