Two more suspects were arrested in connection with 5-year-old Ditebogo Phalane Jr’s murder case after a botched hijacking that took his life.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has made significant progress in the investigation of the tragic murder of young Ditebogo Phalane Jr., with two additional suspects recently apprehended. This development comes as the public remains sceptical about the effectiveness and fairness of the country’s justice system.

Ditebogo was fatally shot during a hijacking outside his home in Soshanguve, a crime that shocked and saddened the community. The boy was running to greet his father when the incident occurred.

Details of the Arrests

According to eNCA, police received a crucial tip-off that led to the swift arrest of two suspects. These individuals, along with two others previously detained, are scheduled to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Wednesday, May 22. Notably, one of the new suspects had previously been released on bail for hijacking and attempted murder.

Public Skepticism and Outrage

Despite the arrests, there is a prevailing sense of distrust among South Africans regarding the judicial process. Many fear that the suspects might be granted bail, prolonging the case and denying justice for Ditebogo. This sentiment is evident in the numerous comments shared on social media platforms like Facebook.

Makgola Lehong expressed frustration, stating, “They will get bail because we have the best constitution in the world, where the rights of the criminals are more important than that of the victims.”

Quinton Dreyer suggested a need for transparency, “We must petition that this whole bail saga be investigated and the funding made public so we can see which magistrates must be criminally charged.”

Mologadi Mahloko simply demanded, “They must not be granted bail.”

Adv Reiki Ramonti’s Ramokhoase voiced a harsher view, “Those who killed that little boy deserve a death sentence.”

Samkelo Iven Mahamba highlighted a common critique, “Police do their job exceptionally well. The courts fail us.”
