Tragic Loss: Two Oceans Half-marathon 2023 Winner Mbuleli Mathanga Found Dead in Girlfriend’s Room
The South African running community is in mourning following the tragic death of Mbuleli Mathanga, the 2023 Two Oceans half-marathon champion and former South African 10,000m champion.
He was found dead in a house north of Durban, hanging by the laces of his running shoes.
The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation, with preliminary reports suggesting an argument took place between Mbuleli Mathanga and his girlfriend before the incident.
A Champion Remembered
In a statement released by the Comrade Marathon team, they expressed their deep sadness and offered their condolences to Mbuleli Mathanga’s family, friends, running mates, and Phantane Club members.
“It is with immense sadness that we have been notified that our 2023 half-marathon champion, Mbuleli Mathanga, has passed away this morning. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, running mates, and Phantane Club mates. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this deeply challenging time,”read part of the statement.
They remembered him as an extraordinary winner who inspired everyone with his passion for road running and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Tragic Circumstances
According to News24, Mbuleli Mathanga, a talented athlete, was found hanging from the laces of his running shoes in his girlfriend’s room.
The Ndwedwe police reported that an inquest docket had been opened to investigate the incident.
It was alleged that he had an argument with his girlfriend before his death, and he was discovered with an open wound at the back of his head.

A Promising Career Cut Short
Mbuleli Mathanga had achieved remarkable success in his athletic career. He won the South African 10,000m crown in 2021 and 2022 and represented his country at the African Championships and the World Cross-Country Championships.
He also competed internationally, finishing third in the Roma-Ostia half-marathon. His recent victory in the Two Oceans half-marathon showcased his talent and potential as a rising star in South African athletics.
