Renowned Ukhozi FM presenter and accomplished businessman Bheka ‘Beekay’ Mchunu has died at a local clinic after battling a prolonged illness. The news of his demise has left a void in the hearts of many, especially those who followed his impactful career.

Health Struggles and Forced Hiatus

In December 2022, Beekay faced a setback when he was forced off the air during his weekend maskandi show, Sigiya Ngengoma, due to health issues. The experienced radio host complained of excruciating throat pain, leading to his temporary absence from the airwaves. Two months earlier, in October 2022, a similar incident occurred when he fainted during his show, prompting producers to play music to cover the unexpected interruption.

His health challenges date back to 2020, as he found himself in and out of hospitals. In 2021, a prolonged hospitalization of more than three weeks led to Khetha Gwala stepping in as a temporary replacement. Sources close to Beekay revealed that his health struggles were a recurring issue, with periods of recuperation at home and extended breaks from work.

Addressing his health concerns, Beekay expressed, “I believe it is more than a typical illness, but I am on the path to recovery at my residence in Durban. My brother is diligently seeking the best traditional healer to address this directly, as I have consulted multiple doctors without a conclusive diagnosis.”

Sudden Demise at Esikhawini Clinic

Tragically, Beekay’s health took a severe turn yesterday afternoon, leading to his urgent hospitalization at Esikhawini Clinic. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, he passed away at the clinic, leaving behind a legacy in both the radio industry and his local community.

Aside from his contributions to Ukhozi FM, Beekay was a respected figure in the community, owning a school in the area. A family member recounted the sudden decline in his health, stating, “We rushed him to the local clinic because he suddenly fell seriously ill. He passed on at the clinic while the nurses were still busy with him.”

SABC Spokesperson’s Response

Upon reaching out for a comment, SABC spokesperson Mmoni Seapolela requested some time to provide an official statement. The entire Ukhozi FM community, along with Beekay’s listeners and well-wishers, mourns the loss of a remarkable talent.
