X users have been left in tears after a social media influencer by the username Bontle ran away with stokvel money contributions for groceries from her followers.
Like other stokvels, Bontle found a group of people who were willing to deposit a fixed amount of money every month towards end of year groceries.
How Bontle lured her victims with promises of fortune
In December 2022, Bontle posted on her X timeline that she is doing a stokvel and that those interested should send her a message. People easily trusted her and joined her stokvel because she was famous on social media apps.

Those who were added to her Whatsapp groups shared that she sent the rules of her stokvel once people joined. Bontle, who claimed to have many other stokvel groups, shared that the rules of her stokvel were that everyone sends their contributions on the last day of the month.
Anyone who was late with their payments was to be charged a late payment fee on top of the fixed deposit.
Bontle runs away with the money raised
Many of her victims realised that Bontle had disappeared with their hard-earned money after she was nowhere to be found when it came time to pay up.

According to reports from one of her groups, they had raised a total of R300 000, and when the agreed date for them to meet and share groceries arrived, Bontle had disappeared. Bontle went the extra mile of deactivating all her social media accounts.

Police involvement in the case
According to some posts on X, the members of the stokvel have reported the matter to the police, and Bontle is now wanted for arrest by the authorities.
