Uzalo Season Seven Now In Production

SABC’s most-watched soapie, Uzalo, has confirmed that it’s now ready to shoot season seven after posting pictures on its Facebook page with the caption, “all ready and fired up to shoot season seven!”

“Uzalo has earned it and its performance speaks for itself. Uzalo has broken records in the industry for a soapie or a long-running drama series,” said Sane Zondi, SABC 1’s Programmes Manager.

The local soapie was supposed to have started production in November 2020 but due to some internal matters that were halting the production, it had to be moved to January.

Stained Glass TV which produces the local soapie has since gone into a three-year agreement with SABC 1 that will see the show running until 2023 subject to review.

The show is keeping mum on how the storyline will shift when the new season premieres in March but Clive Madiya has been promoted to head writer, following Chris Q Radebe’s departure.

“It’s too early to give away story plans. We can’t let the cat out of the bag just yet but we can assure you that Uzalo’s best years are yet to come. The story ideas coming out of current story workshops are exciting.

In addition, this new agreement with SABC makes a profound impact on the production’s ability to invest in people, infrastructure and technical capacity. It means job security for employees and consistency for SMME suppliers. The consequence of investment in the aforementioned areas is a better show, which will translate to higher ratings and more advertising revenue.

Our immediate objective is to achieve 65 percent market share within a few months and 70 percent by the end of 2021.

The viewership data is very clear. Before the unexpected five-week on-air hiatus in May, we were averaging 10 million viewers per episode and 62 percent market share. We will get back to those dizzying heights,” said Uzalo’s Executive Producer, Mmamitse Thibedi, who made the revelations to the Sowetan prior to the Facebook post.
