Owning a taxi business in South Africa is a dangerous proposition, as evidenced by the tragic death of a taxi owner in Gingindlovu, northern KZN last week.

Reports suggest that the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the taxi owner and route patrollers employed by the Gingindlovu Taxi Association. Some say that if the taxi owner had chosen a peaceful resolution, he might have survived to see another day.

After the video surfaced on X (formerly Twitter), South Africans shared a range of reactions. Some questioned the taxi owner’s decision to retrieve a gun only to miss his target, while others felt he deserved his fate since he fired first. Here are some of their thoughts:

@Mo_Magoda:

Why go in the car to get a gun and then miss the target

@AHT_YssY:

He drew his gun, fired first, and yet he missed. I will always choose to resolve differences verbally, regardless of how incorrect the other person may be. I am committed to never engaging in a fight, whether the other is armed or not.

@Ngwato_Mokone:

How do we solve this as a nation without attaching a tribe on an act that can be prevented by virtue of being a decent human being ? You don’t even need to be a decent human being to not kill anyone. Is this spiritual because wtf ?

@MUZARIS:

Human life is not valued anymore, these 2 could have engaged in a peaceful argument and come up with a win win solution.

@ESishi1:

It’s like people forget that none of the stuff they’re willing to kill for will matter in the end… every one dies eventually & you take nothing with you when you die. A son/brother/father/friend is now gone & for what?! 💔💔💔 abasamsabi Nkulunkulu abantu!
