Viral sensation Alostro, who took over social media as a drug addict and street beggar, is recovering well in rehab and is now a cook and a builder.
The Internet Darling
Alostro, born Mohau Louis, used to live on the streets, relying on handouts from passing motorists. He broke Mzansi’s internet after a video clip of him humorously sharing his thoughts during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown went viral.
His unique way of expressing himself, often “butchering” the English language, caught the public’s attention and earned him the nickname Alostro. He rose to fame during a government initiative to relocate homeless people to Tshwane for their safety, during which journalists interviewed him, and his commentary became popular.
Ever since videos of him on the streets popped up, people have been entertained. He has become so popular that at some point last year, promoters booked him for club performances.
Alostro Now A Cook And A Builder After Being In Rehab
Because his problem was drug-related, one well-wisher decided to give him a new lease of life. In January, popular DJ Karabo Mokgara, also known as DJ Karri, took 33-year-old Alostro under his wing and got him into rehab. Since then, Alostro’s life has taken a positive turn.
Daily Sun contacted Victor Makhura, owner of the Limpopo Anti-Drugs Gangsterism and Crime organisation, to inquire about Alostro’s progress:
“He’s doing very well, no complaints.”
He explained that they provide comprehensive training to Alostro and other recovering addicts, focusing on various skills, including cooking.
“They don’t just cook; they develop skills like cooking and more. Our goal is to equip them with the tools they need to secure employment and stay away from drugs once they leave rehab. This is so that when they go out, they can be able to find jobs and not go back to drugs.”
