Chaos erupted outside the Johannesburg High Court as angry MK party members attacked Jabulani Khumalo, a prominent figure within the MK Party.

Details of the Attack

Jabulani Khumalo, who had just attended a court hearing, found himself under attack from an enraged group of MK Party supporters. Objects were hurled at his vehicle as he attempted to leave the court premises.

The situation escalated rapidly, forcing Khumalo’s security detail to take drastic measures. In a bid to evade the hostile crowd, his security team collided with two other vehicles.

Underlying Tensions within the MK Party

The attack is rooted in a contentious leadership dispute within the MK Party. Khumalo claims that Jacob Zuma was improperly designated as the party’s leader by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). According to Khumalo, Zuma’s appointment was supposed to be temporary, and the IEC’s recognition of him as the official president contravened the Electoral Commission Act.

In response to this controversy, Khumalo has taken legal action to affirm his position as the legitimate leader of the MK Party. He has accused Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, Jacob Zuma’s daughter, of forging his signature on documents submitted to the IEC, which declared Jacob Zuma as the party’s president.
Khumalo has filed an urgent application with the Electoral Court, seeking a judicial declaration to officially recognize him as the MK Party leader. In his filings, he argues that the IEC’s actions were unlawful and demands immediate recognition of his leadership.

Legal Counteractions

Representing Jacob Zuma, Advocate Dali Mpofu has announced that Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla intends to pursue a defamation lawsuit against Khumalo. Mpofu has dismissed Khumalo’s allegations as baseless and defamatory, intensifying the legal and political strife within the MK Party.
