“We’re Not Surprised”: Mzansi Erupts After Zizi Kodwa Is Set Free

Mzansi has taken to social media to voice its opinions after former Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa and businessman Jehan Mackay were cleared of corruption charges. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in Gauteng withdrew the charges, making both men free from legal proceedings.

The charges stemmed from allegations that Kodwa used money provided by Mackay to fund luxury purchases, including an SUV and lavish accommodations. However, both successfully argued for the charges to be dropped, citing various grounds.

Director of Public Prosecutions Withdraws Charges

The corruption charges, based on alleged violations of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (PRECCA), were withdrawn by Advocate Andrew Chauke. Initially, Kodwa faced accusations from incidents spanning April 2015 to February 2016 when he served as the African National Congress (ANC) National Spokesperson. The claims suggested he received over R1.6 million in direct payments and luxurious accommodation from Mackay in exchange for influencing government procurement to benefit Mackay.

NPA Confirms Decision Following ‘New Developments’

Confirming the decision, NPA spokesperson Phindile Mjonondwane explained that the withdrawal was based on “successful representations” by the accused, with considerations of the case docket’s evidence, prosecutor reports, input from the Specialised Commercial Crimes Unit, and consultations with the Investigating Officer.

Mjonondwane added that new developments, which changed the case’s circumstances, led to the decision, and the likelihood of a successful prosecution had also lessened.
