Zimbabwean Suspect Arrested In Connection With Thabo Bester Saga
Another arrest has been made in the ongoing Thabo Bester prison escape saga, according to a statement by police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
On Sunday, law enforcement apprehended a 31-year-old Zimbabwean man in Johannesburg, TimesLIVE reports.
“At this stage, he faces a charge of assisting an inmate to escape from lawful custody. The suspect is likely to face more charges.”
Brigadier Athlenda Mathe stated that a total of nine people have been arrested in connection with the case so far. The 31-year-old Zimbabwean man is scheduled to make an appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
“The possibility of police effecting more arrests cannot be ruled out.”
In a media briefing last week, National Police Commissioner Fanie Masemola informed the press that additional arrests were anticipated in the ongoing case. The investigation involves Thabo Bester’s partner, Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, among others.
“We are investigating … there are a lot of people involved in this investigation.”
Top Cop Leading Thabo Bester Investigation Dies
In a recent report, Brigadier Jackson Mkhaulesi, the prominent investigator assigned to the Thabo Bester escape case, expressed his concerns about his own safety moments before he parked his vehicle on the side of a bustling road in Bloemfontein and tragically took his own life.
It has been revealed that Brigadier Jackson Mkhaulesi, a seasoned police officer, had made assertions of being “followed” and expressed genuine fear for his life.
Tragically, on Monday, 5 June, Mkhaulesi, who served as the head of the Free State Organized Crime Unit, took his own life using a government-issued firearm.
This devastating event took place mere hours after the dismissal of Nandipha Magudumana’s plea for release, which was based on her allegations of an “unlawful arrest” in connection with the Thabo Bester escape case.
