The news of the rapper’s untimely passing has sent shockwaves throughout South Africa and the country is now mourning his loss.
According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda, AKA was shot and killed in Morningside, Durban at 10 pm last night by two unknown gunmen.
The rapper had just finished having dinner at a restaurant and was on his way to his car when the hitmen opened fire, killing him and his friend Tebello Motsoane.
The painful reality for those affected by AKA’s death is that he was on his way to celebrate his birthday at Yugo Durban.
As the news and footage of the shooting spread on social media, Yugo Durban issued a notice announcing the cancellation of the event due to “unforeseen circumstances.” This further added to the grief and shock felt by those who knew and loved AKA.
AKA’s parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes, have released a statement and confirmed the rapper’s passing on his social media accounts. It reads:
“It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son and confirm his untimely and tragic death on the evening of February 10, 2023. We are awaiting further details from the Durban Police.
“To us, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, most importantly, father to his beloved daughter Kairo. To many, he was AKA, SUPAMEGA, BHOVA, and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by. Our son was loved and he gave love in return.
“In this time of grief, we appeal for your compassion, space, and time to congregate as a family to decide on the upcoming days. We thank you for the love and support we have received thus far, and ask you to continue to keep us in your prayers and uplifted in the Lord.”
