History of the Andrea Mitchell Centre at the University of Pennsylvania
The Andrea Mitchell Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Pennsylvania was established in 2004 as part of the Penn Program on Democracy, Citizenship, and Constitutionalism. The center is named after Andrea Mitchell, a 1967 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and an accomplished journalist who has covered politics and foreign policy for NBC News for over four decades.
The idea for the center came from a group of Penn faculty members who saw a need for an interdisciplinary research center dedicated to the study of democratic institutions and practices. They believed that there was a pressing need for scholarship and public engagement on the topic of democracy, particularly in light of the changing political landscape in the United States and around the world.
To that end, the Andrea Mitchell Centre was created with the goal of supporting research, teaching, and public engagement on a range of topics related to democracy, including the role of the media, the functioning of political institutions, and the challenges facing democratic governance. The center is committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and bringing together scholars from across the University of Pennsylvania and beyond.
Since its founding, the Andrea Mitchell Centre has hosted numerous events and activities, including lectures, workshops, and conferences, featuring leading scholars and public figures. It has also provided research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students interested in studying democratic theory and practice. The center has been an important voice in the ongoing conversations about democracy, both in academia and in the public sphere.
Today, the Andrea Mitchell Centre remains committed to its mission of promoting scholarship, teaching, and public engagement on the topic of democracy. It continues to support research, sponsor events, and provide resources and support for members of the Penn community who want to engage in public discourse and participate in democratic institutions and practices.
