Austria Scholarship Foundation for Undergraduates, Graduates and Postgraduates 2023

The Austrian Government is calling prospective and qualifying individuals to apply for the Austria Scholarship for Undergraduates, Graduates, and Postgraduates for the year 2023.

People who are descendants of forced laborers under the Nazi regime, or those from countries heavily affected by the Nazi regime, especially in terms of forced labor recruitment, can apply for a grant to conduct research related to their Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral thesis. This grant does not provide scholarships for Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral/PhD studies in Austria, summer courses, language courses, clinical traineeships, or internships.

Applicants must not have studied, pursued research, or conducted academic work in Austria within six months prior to accepting the grant. Doctoral students who are eligible for this grant must be under 40 years of age, born on or after September 1, 1982, while other eligible students must be under 35 years of age, born on or after September 1, 1987.

To apply for a scholarship from the Scholarship Foundation of the Republic of Austria

  • You must fill out the online application form on www.scholarships.at.
  • You must include a project plan that explains your research plans and how you will prepare for your stay in Austria.
  • You must also provide a CV, two letters of recommendation from university lecturers, and a confirmation of supervision from a supervisor at the Austrian university, university of applied sciences, or research institution you have chosen.

You must also upload a scanned copy of your passport and your university graduation certificate. If you are currently enrolled in a study program, you must provide proof of your enrollment. If you are a descendant of forced laborers, you must provide a processing number or a photocopy of the letter of information from the Austrian “Reconciliation, Peace, and Cooperation Fund” or the German Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future.”

The Scholarship Council will select candidates based on several criteria, including the necessity of the research stay in Austria for your thesis process, your plans for the research stay, how you plan to conduct your project, your main objectives for the research stay, the steps you plan to take to achieve these objectives, your academic background, and the plausibility of your application. The OeAD-GmbH will conduct a formal check on your application.

Eligibility Criteria for the scholarship

Scholarships are awarded based on merit, and meeting all the requirements does not guarantee receiving an award. Only one award per category is possible, and renewals are not possible. Scholarships can be awarded for research periods in scientific institutions in Austria, such as universities and the Austrian Academy of Sciences. When applicants apply for a scholarship, their personal data is processed according to Article 1 of the Austrian Data Protection Act.

Incomplete or non-compliant applications will not be considered. If someone obtains a scholarship under false pretenses or receives another grant during the same time period, they must repay the scholarship in full. Short-term grants (1 to 3 months) from January to June are given priority due to potential accommodation issues.

Scholarship Benefits

The Austria Scholarship Foundation provides several benefits to its grant recipients, including:

  1. Monthly scholarship instalments: The scholarship holders receive a monthly payment of 1,050 EUR.
  2. Health insurance: The scholarship holder’s health insurance is covered, and the cost varies between 55 to 200 EUR per month, depending on the age, category, and health status of the recipient.
  3. Accommodation: The scholarship holders can get accommodation for a monthly fee ranging from 220 to 470 EUR, plus an additional 18 EUR administrative fee per month to the OEAD Housing Office.
  4. Travel allowance: The amount of the travel allowance depends on the country of origin of the scholarship holder. If the recipient is not from a member country of the European Union, EFTA, EEA, or OECD, then they will be given a travel allowance.
