Zuma’s ‘Girlfriend’ in Parliament? Backlash as Phindile Gwala is Sworn in as MK Party MP
Former Muvhango actress Phindile Gwala caused a furorre on social media when it was alleged that she has made a career switch from the small screen to politics and that she had been sworn in as a member of Parliament for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

58 MK Party Members Finally Sworn In as MPs
Gwala was present when the 58 members of the MK Party who did not attend the recent swearing-in ceremony for all elected MPs hosted by Parliament just over a week ago.
Among those sworn in was the impeached Western Cape High Court Judge President John Hlophe, who will serve as the party’s Chief Whip and Parliamentary leader. ANC member and corruption-accused Zizi Kodwa was also sworn in.

The pictures of Phindile Gwala in parliament sparked mixed reactions on X (formerly Twitter). While some congratulated her on the milestone, others suggested that her appointment was not based on merit but rather a reward for her relationship with former President and MK party leader Jacob Zuma. Some welcomed her addition to parliament, citing her age and this being her first foray into politics. However, others questioned how she ended up in parliament, as they had not seen or heard of her campaigning for the MK Party.

It turns out that Gwala was in parliament not as a member of the MK Party. She issued a statement saying that she was at the swearing-in ceremony, not as an MK party member, but as a gesture of support for her spiritual mother and friend, Bishop Nokwethemba Mtshweni, who is a member of the MK party.
