Launch of the Grocery Stokvel

Last December, Bontle announced on her timeline that she was launching a grocery stokvel, urging interested individuals to message her. Given her social media fame, people readily trusted her and joined the stokvel.

Those added to her WhatsApp groups shared that Bontle outlined the stokvel rules upon joining. Claiming to manage several stokvel groups, she emphasized that contributions were to be made on the last day of the month, with late payments incurring an additional fee.

On the Saturday just two days before Christmas, reports circulated that Bontle had vanished with the grocery stokvel contributions, amounting to a staggering R300,000.

Bontle Sets the Record Straight on R300K Grocery Stokvel

Setting the record straight, Bontle issued a statement denying the existence of multiple WhatsApp groups and clarifying that only 18 people had joined her stokvel. She asserted that it wasn’t a grocery stokvel but rather a voucher stokvel.

“In January 2023, myself and a group of like-minded people were part of a voucher stokvel. The group which consisted of 18 people in total did not have a set amount to be contributed. People contributed different amounts which were loaded into their preferred store voucher cards. Every month I would do a spreadsheet and send it to everyone with the updated amount,” part of her statement reads.

Actual Amount and Stokvel Distribution

She explained that they initially agreed to share the vouchers at the end of the month, but some participants requested theirs earlier due to unforeseen circumstances. Bontle clarified that she provided them with vouchers based on their savings.

“The agreed date where everyone would receive their loaded cards was set for the end of December. However some of the ladies who were part of the stokvel, then requested their vouchers this month (December 2023) due to unforeseen circumstances and they were given what was due to them based on their savings,” she added.

Bontle clarified that three individuals will receive their cards by month-end, while five will get theirs in January. Contrary to the alleged R300,000, she stated the total collected amount was R133,750 of which a sizeable amount was for gift vouchers.

“Currently, there are only 3 people who are yet to get voucher cards this month and 5 who are getting
their cards in January. There never was a R300 000 stokvel, the total amount collected is R133750 of which R133310 was for gift vouchers from different stores. I did not steal any money nor did run away with any money,” she concluded her statement.
