Controversial South African church leader Reverend Erlo Stegen, who has faced accusations of operating a cult-like organization, has passed away.
Rev. Stegen was the founder of KwaSizabantu Mission, located in Kranskop in the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). He succumbed to dementia at the age of 88.

Confirmation of the Death of Rev. Erlo Stegen
KwaSizabantu Mission released a statement confirming the demise of Rev. Erlo Stegen:
“Erlo Hartwig Stegen the founder and director of KwaSizabantu Mission was destined to hear the call of God at an early age from which he put his hand to the plough and never looked back. God has called his faithful servant home. His life and passion for leading people to Christ inspire us to follow.”
A Legacy of Controversy
Rev. Erlo Stegen’s life and ministry were full of drama. He faced opposition and allegations from some of his own family members, who accused him of running a cult, financial misconduct, and the misuse of mission resources. They also asserted that he had abused his authority and influence over both the mission and its members.
Accusations of human rights violations, including sexual abuse, physical violence, psychological manipulation, and forced labour at the mission, were levelled against Rev. Stegen. Numerous former members came forward to share their stories of trauma and suffering experienced under Stegen.

The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious, and Linguistic Communities (CRL Commission) conducted an investigation into these allegations. While they did not find evidence of criminal wrongdoing, the commission directed Rev. Stegen to issue apologies to the victims and implement changes within the mission.
These controversies have cast a shadow over Rev. Stegen’s reputation and legacy, prompting questions about the integrity and validity of his work. Nonetheless, some of his supporters and followers have defended him, commending his contributions in both humanitarian and spiritual spheres.
For some of the women who had accused the controversial pastor, news of Rev. Stegen’s passing brought a sense of relief:
