Family Appeals for Funds to Bury Nollywood Actor Mr Ibu

The family and friends of the late Nollywood icon John Okafor, affectionately known as Mr Ibu, have turned to the public for financial assistance to cover his funeral costs.

The beloved actor, known for his comedic brilliance, passed away on March 2, 2024, following a cardiac arrest at Evercare Hospital in Lagos after enduring months of hospitalization and a leg amputation.

A Call for Public Support

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Mr Ibu’s family and friends to raise the necessary funds for his burial.

The family announced that the funeral will take place on June 28, 2024, as part of a five-day memorial event. In a heartfelt appeal, the central planning committee, composed of his loved ones, reached out to the public for donations.

Financial Strain from Prolonged Illness

In a joint statement seen by Punch, Monday Diamond, Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Christy Ejiofor, Secretary, and Emeka Rollas, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, highlighted the immense financial burden that Mr Ibu’s prolonged illness had placed on the family.

The Central Planning Committee of the late John Okafor (comprising family and friends) is appealed to the general public for financial support to help execute a successful burial for the Nollywood legend.

“Mr Ibu suffered an ailment which consumed tens of millions of naira through hospital bills for almost a year, which is why we are asking for financial assistance. The CPC urges the public to support this cause to give Mr Ibu the farewell he deserves,” the committee urged, while providing a Zenith Bank account for contributions.

Celebrating a Nollywood Icon

Mr Ibu, who passed away at the age of 62, left an indelible mark on Nollywood with his comedic talent and memorable performances.

The planned funeral events aim to honour his significant contributions to the film industry and celebrate his life.

Detailed Funeral Arrangements

According to the funeral announcement signed by Sunday Okafor on behalf of the family, the burial proceedings will commence on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, with a novelty match between Nollywood stars and Rangers International.

A candlelight procession will follow on Wednesday, June 26, and a wake will be held at Mr Ibu’s compound in Eziokwe Amurri, Enugu State, on Thursday, June 27.

“On Friday, June 28, 2024, his body will leave Eastern Nigeria Medical Center to his hometown in Amurri, Nkanu West LGA around 10 am for the burial ceremony. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 30, followed by a thanksgiving service,” the statement added.
