An angry crowd of community members have taken the law into their hands and killed a man found with a child’s body in his house.

Authorities in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, are currently investigating two cases of murder following a distressing incident involving the discovery of a six-year-old child’s body. The alleged perpetrator of the heinous crime was found dead, reportedly beaten by members of the community. The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, and the child had been missing since the previous day.

Community Action Prompts Police Response

On Thursday evening, law enforcement was called to a residence in NU 13 Inyibiba, where the community had initiated a search for the missing child based on received information. Upon arrival, police faced hostility from the community. With backup support, they managed to enter the premises.

Col Priscilla Naidu, spokesperson for the Eastern Cape police, reported, “A severely injured male was found naked outside; however, he later succumbed to his injuries. Upon searching the house, the lifeless body of the six-year-old was discovered under the bed, wrapped in plastic.”

Suspected Sexual Assault Raises Concerns

Col Naidu expressed concerns over the possibility of sexual assault, stating, “It is suspected that the child may have been subjected to sexual assault, but confirmation awaits the post-mortem findings.”

Police Commissioner Stresses Vigilance and Education

Lt-Gen Nomthetheleli Mene, the Provincial Police Commissioner, emphasized the importance of vigilance and education in protecting children from predators. He stated that:

While emotions are running high, it is crucial to emphasise that vigilantism is not the solution. The rule of law must prevail and we condemn any form of violence.
