Former Rhythm City actor Setlhabi Taunyane, affectionately known as “Bra Kop,” has revealed that his family rejected his Zimbabwean wife.
The veteran actor decided to share his struggles in his marriage due to his wife’s Zimbabwean nationality.
Bra Kop Says His Family Rejects His Wife
In a candid discussion on King David’s Podcast, Bra Kop revealed that his wife has not been entirely accepted by his family, leading to a strained relationship that has persisted for their 17-year marriage.
“I’m trying my best, especially because my wife is from Zimbabwe. We have suffered because she’s from Zimbabwe. My family never really accepted my wife,” he narrates.
He explained that one of the significant challenges is the exclusion he feels from his family.
“I just heard that one of my cousins in Diepkloof was getting married two weeks ago, and no one phoned me. Do you understand, my brother? I’ve learned to live with that. Once you are abandoned by the family, this thing grows bigger, even outside the family.”
His use of the term “lekwerekwere,” a derogatory term for foreign nationals in South Africa, highlights the xenophobia his wife has encountered throughout their marriage.
Mixed Emotions On The Internet
Bra Kop’s sentiments elicited various reactions online.
FS:
“Strength to him and his wife.”
Vukani:
“His family is cruel.”
TR:
“What if it’s not about the zim wife but his stance on Jacob Zuma?”
Kasi:
“He does not make enough money. Make enough money, and your family will overlook everything.”
Mzoo:
“But if you associate yourself with a Zimbabwean or Nigerian..you should be ready for it because it’s a known fact South Africans are not really fond of those two nations, and we all know the root cause🤷♂️”
