Makhadzi said she is going through a rough patch. All her earnings go towards clearing a South African Revenue Service (SARS) debt, leaving her with little to no money for her upkeep.

Makhadzi’s struggles to get money to fly to the US were not in vain, as she walked away with the BET Viewers Choice: Best International Act award. When Terrence J surprised her with the gong, Makhadzi was dumbstruck and fell down in utter shock in her expensive costume.

Today, the Murahu hitmaker touched down in South Africa, and multitudes thronged OR Tambo International Airport to welcome her.

New Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie wanted to welcome Makhadzi, but he was in Parliament for his swearing-in. In his stead, the Department’s chief director, Tsholofelo Lejaka, was at the airport to welcome Makhadzi.

Following revelations that she borrowed money to travel to the US, the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture is engaging the singer’s team to discuss how they can help.

Makhadzi’s manager, Lucky Tshilimandila, disclosed to ZiMoja:

“I am not aware of the Mashonisa story, but I heard about it, and we are looking into the matter. The Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture has always supported Makhadzi in her shows and concerts. The awards came at a crucial time in our country, which was during the elections, and we understood. We are currently in talks with arts and culture, and we welcome their support.”
