“I Am Their Slave”| Makhadzi Left Singing The Blues After Open Mic Productions Removes Her New Song From YouTube As Record Label Battle Escalates
Makhadzi’s talent as an artist is widely recognized and celebrated throughout the country.
Yet, it appears when it comes to matters of her personal relationships and career management, she has faced significant challenges and setbacks.
Early in her career, she was taken advantage of by her initial manager, leaving her vulnerable to exploitation.
Unfortunately, it appears Makhadzi’s struggles with her recent record label continue to persist.
Despite announcing that she had parted ways with Open Mic, her former label of three years, recent developments suggest otherwise.
Makhadzi puts Open Mic on blast
On Saturday, May 6th, 2023, Makhadzi took to Twitter and posted a vague message alluding to heartbreak.
In the subsequent tweets that followed, she created a thread outlining how Open Mic has treated her since she announced her departure from the label. She wrote:
Good morning, I don’t know where to start cz I have a lot to say.
In her tweets, Makhadzi revealed that she had been under the impression that she had signed a three-year contract with Open Mic.
However, she recently learned that this was not the case. Despite this, she is unable to dispute the contract as she does not possess a copy and is unaware of its specific terms and conditions.
As such, her thread explains in part that:
I signed with Open Mic only for three years. In [these] sp three years I dropped 4 albums. I have never received any cent of my sales. Some of my album[s] reached platinum, some gold. And a lot of [the] hit songs that reached platinum and gold. But I continue to work without complaining [because] all I wanted was to serve my contract, to avoid them saying I bridged the contract.
I’m talking about the contract that I signed and no one [was] allowed to give me a copy. I worked with Open Mic without a copy of my contract ever since they said they will send it. I kept on reminding them but no one was willing to send me my contract.”
In her series of tweets, Makhadzi further elaborated on her grievances with Open Mic.
She explained how the record label had automatically renewed her contract without her consent and how they had sent her an official statement confirming the renewal only after she publicly announced her departure from the label.
Additionally, Makhadzi suggested that the record label had deliberately placed a middleman between herself and her contract in order to restrict her access to it.
Furthermore, she accused Open Mic of using revenge porn as a means to keep her compliant in their irregular and potentially illegal dealings.
