Is Scandal’s Thando Deaf In Real Life? Get To Know Mxolisi Nodom

Scandal wowed the soapville last week by introducing, for the first time in the history of South African soapie, its first deaf actor.

The move is seen as the first step in lifting hope for the talented disabled looking to begin their career in acting.

Scandal! impressed a lot of social media users the day it revealed that it was bringing up a new actor.

Mxolisi Nodom, is the real name of the actor who now plays Thando on the show.

Thando is Violetta’s (played by Cindy Mahlangu) deaf brother who comes looking for his dead sister.

Violetta was one cruel and vile character killed after involvement in a money scandal.

Thando, who just made his debut on the show is set to challenge his sister’s nemesis, Mamba, who everyone is afraid of.

While shows have featured deaf characters before, many of them use able-speaking characters to play deaf.

But that’s not the case with Scandal’s new character.

Mxolisi Nodom, who’s originally from Kimberly in the Northern Cape, is deaf in real life and was born in that way.

Before getting auditioned for his role on Scandal, Mxolisi was involved with Zwakala, an art competition for the deaf.

After learning of the role Scandal was auditioning for, Mxolisi, who was not in Joburg at that time sent through a clip of his act.

He was luckily called for tow more physical auditions, which he nailed.

Talking about his role and the opportunity on Scandal, Mxolisi says he wishes his role would open more doors for more deaf actors to pursue their dreams while at the same time encouraging South Africans to learn about the language.
