Who is Mfundo Gcaba?
Mfundo Gcaba is a prominent figure in the KwaZulu-Natal taxi industry and nephew of former President Jacob Zuma. He is involved in the taxi business and hails from the influential Gcaba family, renowned for their vast taxi empire encompassing over 500 minibuses and buses. Gcaba has previously found himself entangled in legal matters, notably in 2015 when he was among 11 individuals accused in a violent altercation at the Brook Street taxi rank, resulting in the death of 15 people amidst a dispute over routes. The family’s involvement in the transportation sector extends to supporting political campaigns, including those of former President Zuma, by providing logistical support.
Originating from a large family with multiple mothers, the Gcaba brothers inherited their father Mkhulekelwa Simon Gcaba’s taxi enterprises following his assassination in 1996 amidst suspected taxi violence. Mandla Gcaba, the eldest brother, assumed leadership, continuing the family’s influential presence in the industry. Additionally, the Gcabas have faced accusations of involvement in funding unrest following Zuma’s arrest in July 2021.

During the court proceedings, evidence emerged suggesting Mfundo Gcaba’s involvement in financial transactions linked to the tragic events. Following the shooting incident, R803,455 was transferred to the organiser, Mziwethemba Gwabenis’ accounts, with records indicating a reference to “dividends.” The nature of these transactions raised suspicions of attempts to conceal the true purpose of the funds.
A Bright Circle Pty Ltd account transferred the money, and records indicate Gcaba is the sole director. This raised suspicions as to how the funds were transferred to dividends if the company has no shareholders.
