Nota Baloyi Appears in Court Following Prison Release
Nhlamulo “Nota” Baloyi, the controversial music manager, made an appearance at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday after being released from Johannesburg Prison, commonly known as Sun City, earlier in the week.
Baloyi, who is also facing a rape allegation made by actress Itumeleng Bokaba, was released under correctional supervision. His court appearance was related to a protection order issued in September, which restricts Bokaba from discussing him on social media.
In court, Baloyi requested that his attorney review a video he believes could show Bokaba violating the protection order. Speaking to TshisaLIVE, he explained the legal delays caused by his imprisonment.
“It’s a very costly exercise but hopefully it will be done soon. I was in prison and therefore could not reply or file my affidavits in time so they’ve given [me] an extension until December 30 to file the reply to the affidavits and the indexing needs to be submitted on January 21, and the matter will be heard on January 26,” he told TshisaLIVE..
Reflecting on his time in prison, Baloyi shared his relief at avoiding physical harm, particularly sexual violence
“When you’re in prison you think you might be raped. Fortunately that didn’t happen to me. You are able to trade things like slices of bread, so if you give them soap, they iron your clothes. And I had spare Sunlight. My case has been postponed to February 26,” he said.
Baloyi served nearly 20 days of a 60-day sentence handed down in March 2023 by the Johannesburg High Court. The sentence stemmed from a defamation case brought against him by rapper Ntokozo Mdluli, known as K.O, over allegations Baloyi made on social media.
After his release in late November, Baloyi took to X (formerly Twitter) to reflect on his prison experience. In his posts, he expressed nostalgia for the connections he made during incarceration and boasted about the perks he enjoyed.
“Among serial killers, mass murderers, rapists, scammers, fraudsters and all manner of deplorable characters, your GOAT (greatest of all time) was the biggest rock star. Inside, I had my meals brought to me, my clothes ironed every morning from the day I arrived, and a bed waiting for me until my release,” he said.
