Thabo Bester, a convicted criminal who is facing multiple charges, including murder, fraud, and defeating the ends of justice, has repeatedly claimed to have a circle of celebrity friends.
News24 investigative journalist Karyn Maughan recently revealed that Bester had listed a well-known celebrity as one of his contacts. Maughan also shared that Bester had been receiving prison visits from a prominent female, who he claims is a successful billionaire.
Thabo Bester name-dropping his Celebrity Connections
In a leaked letter from prison published by Drum, Bester name-dropped Tumisho Masha, Pearl Thusi, and Bonang Matheba, among others. He claimed to have helped Bonang in getting her dream job and said that he loved her as a sister in God. However, Bonang denied having any association with Bester, calling his allegations bizarre.
Investigations published by GroundUp revealed that Bester, under an alleged accomplice, registered an event and production company called 21st Century Media in 2018, while he was imprisoned. The company held a grand launch party at Hilton Hotel in Sandton, attended by celebrities like Amanda du Pont and Yvonne Chaka Chaka.
The company booked Bonang Matheba as the MC and advertised US actresses Taraji P Henson and Halle Berry and singer Ashanti as speakers. Local actress and media mogul Connie Ferguson and presenter Claire Mawisa were also billed to appear. However, the women were alerted to the scam a month before the event was to take place, leading Bonang to withdraw as host from the event.

The Thabo Bester and Dr Nandi Trial
Thabo Bester and his alleged co-conspirator Nandipha Magudumana are set to make their next court appearance in the coming days. Bester was convicted of rape and murder in 2012 and was sentenced to life at the Magaung Correctional Centre. He had previously written in the leaked letter about feeling loneliness, rejection, and judgment and asked for forgiveness from his high-profile friends.
The investigation into Thabo Bester’s celebrity circle of friends is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge as the case progresses. It is unclear if any of the celebrities named by Bester have any association with him or if they were merely used to give his company and event credibility.
