Bribery and Preferential Treatment?
Sources within the prison alleged that Thabo Bester bribed prison officials to allow him to spend extended periods of time with Magudumana in a private room. This arrangement reportedly started in 2017 when Magudumana began visiting Bester in jail. The sources claimed that Bester had a luxurious life in prison, with privileges not granted to other inmates, such as charging his laptop in the cell.

Past Reports and Controversy
Previous reports have highlighted the relationship between Magudumana and Bester, stating that they have known each other since 2006. Despite losing contact after Magudumana’s marriage and Bester’s imprisonment on sexual assault and murder charges, they reconnected in 2017 when Magudumana started visiting Bester in prison.
G4S confirmed to the justice and correctional services portfolio committee that Magudumana had been a frequent visitor to the prison since 2017. The company has faced criticism in the past, including allegations that it aided Bester in escaping from the facility and facilitating his meetings with Magudumana in a luxury hotel.

Legal Consequences and Minister’s Decision
Several prison officials have been arrested and appeared in court for their alleged involvement in assisting Bester’s escape. The accused, including Magudumana, face multiple charges, such as fraud, corruption, violating a corpse, and defeating the ends of justice. In light of these events, Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola has announced his intention to terminate the contract between the government and G4S.
