Daily Sun reported that the 31-year-old MOTHEO FM host died on the N8 between Bloemfontein and Botshabelo on Sunday, June 2. Mokoena was with his friend, Tshepo Tsebe, who also perished in the incident.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane said they have opened a case of culpable homicide, and the Bloemspruit Police Station is investigating the heartbreaking incident.

According to Covane, the police rushed to the accident scene and found two men lying near a vehicle.

“The police were called to the accident scene at about 02:30 and, on arrival, found the two lifeless bodies of African males lying near a motor vehicle. The third person, an African female, informed the police that the three of them were driving from Botshabelo when their vehicle got a flat tyre. The two males got out of the vehicle to change the flat tyre, and the female alleges that she rested in the backseat and took a nap and was woken up by the loud bang caused by the collision.”

Covane added that two unknown men arrived from the direction where a white BMW sedan had halted and identified the victims by name before driving off without reporting the accident. Emergency medical officials declared Mokoena Champion and his friend dead at the scene.

Police’s preliminary investigation discovered an address in Mandela View, but they did not find the driver or the white BMW. Police confirmed that the owner of the BMW resides at the address.

Motheo FM station manager Lebogang Matolong expressed deep sorrow over Mokoena Champion’s death:

“We’ve lost a talented presenter whose future was bright. We still want to know what really happened. Mokoena Champion was still young. We expected a lot from him in our process of building a powerful radio station. He had a huge listenership in Bloemfontein and surrounding areas.”
