Late rapper AKA dominates the nominations for the 2023 South African Music Awards (SAMAs), securing a total of seven nominations for his posthumous album “Mass Country.”

The Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA) unveiled these nominations at The Soweto Theatre in Jabulani, Soweto. Notably, the SAMAs will depart from their customary venue at Sun City and take place at the Durban ICC on November 17 and 18. Furthermore, KwaZulu-Natal is set to host the SAMAs for the years 2024 to 2026.

 

AKA Leads The 2023 SAMAs Nominations

AKA, born Kiernan Forbes, earned nominations in several categories, including Male Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Engineered Album, Best Collaboration (with two different songs), Best Produced Music Video, and Best Hip Hop Album.

Following closely behind is rapper KO with six nominations, while Sjava, Kabza De Small, and DJ Maphorisa also received significant recognition.

Gospel sensation Ntokozo Mbambo stands as the sole female nominee in the Album of the Year category, competing alongside AKA, KO, Sjava, and Kabza De Small.

Newcomer Sincerely Anne is making waves with three nominations in the categories of Newcomer of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, and Best Engineered Album for her project titled “To Whom it May Concern.”

The eligibility period for this year’s nominations spans from February 1, 2022, to April 14, 2023.
