Early Motherhood

In an interview, Mchunu shared her story of resilience and courage. She said she became pregnant with her first child at 14 after disobeying her parents’ warnings. She then had two more children before she completed matric.

Mchunu said her parents supported her education, but they died when she was 19. She moved in with the father of her fourth child, who was abusive. She painstakingly recalled that he would beat her up and insult her, especially when she became pregnant with her fifth child.

The Gomora actress decided to leave him and take her children with her. She struggled to find a job and a place to stay but never gave up hope. She later had two more children with different men, but she said she was not looking for love.

Mchunu stumbled into acting by chance when she accompanied a friend to an audition and was asked to try out. She landed a role in eKasi: Our Stories, and since then, she has appeared in several shows, including Muvhango, The River, The Queen, and Gomora.

Acting has given her a sense of purpose and fulfilment. She said she loves playing Zodwa, a mother who battles alcoholism and poverty. She said she can relate to Zodwa’s struggles and hopes to inspire other women in similar situations.

Mchunu beamed that she is proud of her seven children, who are now grown up and independent. She reflected that she has learned from her mistakes and regrets nothing. She said she is happy with herself and does not need a man to complete her.

The Gomora star wants to use her platform to raise awareness about teenage pregnancy and domestic violence. She hopes to encourage young girls to focus on their education and dreams. She also wants to urge women in abusive relationships to seek help and leave.
