Skwatta Kamp Member Musawenkosi “Nish” Molefe Dies
South African musician Musawenkosi “Nish” Molefe who was a rapper and member of the 2X SAMA Best Rap Album Skwatta Kamp, has passed away. According to a statement released, the rapper died due to Covid-19 complications.
Nish adds to the long list of South African music and art legends who have passed on since the year began. The list includes icons such as actors Lindiwe Ndlovu and Philip Tabane, singers Israel Mosehla, Jonas Gwangwa, and recently Sibongile Khumalo amongst others. This is devastating and a hard knock for Skwatta Kamp lovers especially, those who were hopeful for a new project as whispers claiming an alleged reunion were circulating heavily in the industry.
The legendary seven-member hip-hop group consisted of members Infa, Nish, Shugasmakx, Flabba, Nemza, Slikour, Bozza and was founded in 1996. Boasting a colorful and illustrious career through ought the years, Skwatta Kamp released their final album Fair and Skwear in 2009. The ensemble changed the narrative and added an alternative local semi-urban sound to the South African Hip-Hop landscape, earning numerous accolades along the way, including two South African Music Awards for best rap album and a Channel O best Hip-Hop music video award.
Nish is the second member of the group who has passed. Tragedy struck in March 2015, when Nkululeko Habedi known as the group member “Flabba”, died after he was brutally stabbed by his lover Sindisiwe Manqele. Manqele was found guilty and is currently in custody serving a sentence for Flabba’s murder. The group had a brief reunion, featured on a song by Reason titled ‘Brand New’ and their latest project titled There You Go was recorded in 2018, a tribute to the late Habedi.
Tributes and condolences including a statement from the official South African Music Awards Twitter account, have been pouring across social media timelines since news of Molefe’s passing broke.
