Tragedy: Three Children Die after Consuming Instant Porridge
In a tragic development, three young children from Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape have died after reportedly consuming instant porridge.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on Friday, leaving the community reeling and prompting an urgent investigation into the safety of the product.
Namib Mills Recalls Instant Porridge Amid Investigation
In light of the incident, Namib Mills, the company behind the Top Score brand of instant porridge, has initiated a recall of its product, Zimoja reveals.
The company has also launched its own investigation to determine whether their product was responsible for the deaths.
Marné Bouwer, senior brand manager at Namib Mills, expressed the company’s sorrow stating:
“First and foremost, the loss of life, especially of young children, is a tragedy, and our deepest condolences go out to the families and communities affected. While there is currently no evidence linking our product to this unfortunate event, we are taking the matter very seriously.”
Bouwer further emphasized that the recall is a proactive measure to ensure consumer safety.
Retailer Spar Removes Porridge From Shelves
The porridge consumed by the children was reportedly purchased from a Spar outlet. Following the incident, Spar has also taken the precaution of removing Top Score instant porridge from its shelves. Spar’s spokesperson, Siyolo Dick, confirmed the decision, stating,
“As a precaution, we’ve removed the products from shelves until forensic details are obtained from laboratory test results. Police are also investigating the matter.”
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities, including local police and health officials, are working to determine the exact cause of death. Laboratory tests are being conducted to analyze the contents of the porridge and verify whether it played a role in the tragic deaths. Both Namib Mills and Spar have pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation.
