Two old men have been arrested for killing another pensioner they were staying with at a retirement home in the North West.

The two suspects, aged 75 and 92, allegedly murdered an 80-year-old man at a home in Jericho, near Brits.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani told Zimoja that the two suspects are facing murder charges. The incident occurred after a fight broke out between the suspects and the victim.

According to available information, the victim was returning from the bathroom when he encountered the suspects, who were on their way there. The victim reportedly bumped into one of the suspects, who then struck him.

“Information at our disposal suggests that the victim was coming from the bathroom when he met with the suspects, who were on their way to the bathroom. The victim allegedly bumped one of the suspects, who hit the former with his crutches,” Lieutenant Colonel Funani reported.

She explained that after being hit with the crutches, the two suspects, who are friends, allegedly ganged up and bashed the victim. The owner of the retirement home was alerted, and the police were called.

The victim, who sustained head injuries, was taken to the hospital by ambulance but was declared dead upon arrival. Subsequently, the two suspects were arrested and charged with murder.

Authorities Speak

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in North West, expressed his shock over the incident and extended his condolences to the victim’s family.

The police investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to understand the full details of what led to the violent altercation. The suspects remain in custody as they await further legal proceedings.

Families of residents at the old age home are understandably disturbed by the incident, and the management of the facility is likely to review its policies to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The retirement home has not yet released a statement regarding the incident.
