The recording went: “Please know that you are my source of pride and joy. And for you, I’d kill a bull. I pray that you are safe wherever you go. Wherever life takes you, I pray that God looks after you and keeps you safe. Knowing that your mom loves you dearly. I can’t promise to be there for the rest of your life but I can definitely promise you that I will always love you for the rest of mine. And for that, I will always hold you close in my heart. Unquestionable for whatever you do, know that I will always be there for you. I will always be here loving you and I pray that God looks after you and keeps you safe for all the days of your life. Love you, girl, Nadia, this is Mom.”

Emotional reaction

The emotional message left Nakai in tears, responding to Kelebogile’s question about why hearing her mom left her emotional, she said: “I think when you lose a love, you question whether you are going to experience that type of love again or hear someone say how much they love you like that again. It’s hard to explain.

I know my mom loves me, and I don’t think I grew up with my mom being at home like she is now. I think hearing her speak like that, I know she loves me, but I don’t think we had a relationship where we could express ourselves like that. When you hear from someone like your mom, it is reassuring. It’s not like all the love in your life has just disappeared, and I think that is what’s touching me.”
