A video of viral social media star and entertainer Skomota suddenly freezing in front of his fans during a performance has worried people.
Lately, the media has been awash with Skomota stories that have left people questioning the cost of fame.
The Overnight Fame That Took Mzansi By The Heels
No one imagined this when Skomota, born Thabang Sefala, burst into the limelight. Skomota, born Thabang Sefala, invaded SA social media through videos of his club moments.
He enjoyed balling with the freshest women, who could not resist him. He wore designer clothes and sipped luxurious bottles while having fun. It later emerged that Skomota won R3 million after placing a soccer bet, explaining his high life.
Mzansi cheered him on, reposted and hyped him as he broke the internet. So much was his viral fame that Makhadzi even performed with Skomota at the South African Music Award last year, much to the public’s delight.

Promoters saw an opportunity to cash in and started booking him for live shows. The demand for shows prompted Skomota to hire a manager to handle all the administrative work. He would storm stages and sing along to Limpopo music as he danced. Skomota is a good dancer, so much so that a TikTok challenge in his name birthed the Skomota Dance, mimicking his moves.
However, at what cost did this fame come with?

Earlier this month, the viral sensation’s friend and road manager, Skhothane sa Pitori, said that Skomota’s manager, Moruti wa Dikota, was exploiting him.
Skhothane revealed that promoters were booking Skomota for R35,000, but Moruti was only paying the star R1000 and keeping the rest to himself. Skomota ended up temporarily cancelling shows to deal with the issue.
As if his woes never end, the dancer made a public appearance recently and performed in the streets. Fans left their homes to watch and record him rocking in the scorching sun.
Ever ready, Skomota paced perkily towards the centre as fans intently watched. Midway into the dance, Skomota just stopped. He started rubbing his blank face, devoid of emotion. Standing still, the dancer moved his head to look sideways as his hands motioned aimlessly.
The fans watching also looked equally confused and continued recording him.
