In a recent incident that has sparked widespread outrage, a 19-year-old man was arrested by Western Cape police for allegedly assaulting his grandmother. The incident, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, took place in June.
According to police reports, the young man was tracked down to his residence in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, on Wednesday evening. Despite the severity of the situation, the victim has declined to provide a formal statement.
Man Assaulting Grandmother Arrested Despite Family Not Pressing Charges
Authorities were initially called to the scene, but the victim’s family chose to handle the matter privately, refusing police intervention at that time. The video, which later went viral, shows the suspect assaulting his grandmother in their home. This led to the police opening a case docket on behalf of the victim.
Colonel Andrè Traut, a police spokesperson, confirmed that the victim is currently in the hospital for an unrelated ailment and has not yet given a statement regarding the assault. “Crimes against women and children are a top priority for the SAPS, and we will not ignore any form of violence,” Traut stated.

The video depicts a disturbing scene where the young man shoves his grandmother, causing her to spill food and fall. Despite her pleas, he continues to threaten her. The elderly woman can be heard saying, “Luvo, why are you killing me? Why are you killing me in my house?” The young man responds with, “I will beat you,” to which she replies, “Beat me and kill me, as you have been sent to kill me in my house.”
Government and Community Reactions
The incident has prompted a strong reaction from the social development sector. Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe expressed her shock and called for swift action to protect the grandmother. She emphasized the importance of community involvement in safeguarding the elderly.
Tolashe’s spokesperson, Lumka Oliphant, noted an alarming rise in elder abuse cases despite strengthened legislation. “Older people contribute significantly to society and deserve care and support from all sectors,” Oliphant said.
