While she diligently prepared us for the inevitable as she fought cancer, the headline “Zoleka Mandela Dies” still struck a chord deep within our hearts.
Zoleka Mandela, the beloved granddaughter of anti-apartheid heroes Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela Mandela, passed away on a sombre Monday, September 25, 2023, at the tender age of 43, concluding her valiant and unwavering battle against cancer.
Zoleka Mandela Diagnosed With Cancer For The First Time
Back in 2012, at the age of 32, Zoleka received her initial diagnosis of breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy, rigorous rounds of chemotherapy, and demanding radiation therapy. A double mastectomy is a procedure where both breasts are surgically removed.
By 2013, Zoleka had triumphed over cancer and was declared cancer-free. Her journey was marked by not only this formidable health challenge but also by her personal struggles with addiction and depression.
She tragically lost two of her children in devastating accidents in 2010. Her resilience shone through in her memoir titled “When Hope Whispers,” where she candidly chronicled her battles and victories.
Zoleka Mandela transformed into a fervent activist and motivational speaker, channelling her experiences to raise awareness about cancer, mental health, and women’s rights.
The Second and Final Battle
In 2016, Zoleka confronted cancer once more. With unwavering determination, she fought off this relentless foe.
However, in 2022, she disclosed a profound revelation—cancer had infiltrated her liver and lungs. Facing the grim reality of her situation, she chose to prepare for the inevitable and cherished every moment with her family and friends.
She continued to share her courageous journey through social media. She continued touching the hearts of thousands with her unvarnished honesty, unwavering positivity, and profound faith. Zoleka Mandela did not fear the prospect of departing this world; instead, her deepest fear was to live a life devoid of purpose.
Zoleka Mandela Succumbs To Cancer
On Monday September 18, 2023, Zoleka Mandela was admitted to the hospital for ongoing treatment. She had metastatic cancer that had insidiously spread to her hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain, and spinal cord. Recent scans unveiled the harsh truth—a substantial advancement of the disease, compounded by lung fibrosis and multiple blood clots.
Bone metastasis is a harrowing process where cancer cells migrate from their original location to infiltrate the bones. This phenomenon is particularly prevalent in cases of breast and prostate cancers.
In her final Instagram posts, Zoleka’s countenance bore the weight of her battle. Her face appeared swollen, and her once-lustrous hair had given way to a clean-shaven head. Despite the toll the illness had taken on her, a frail yet determined smile graced her face:
“A few weeks back, I underwent a CT Scan that unveiled blood clots and Fibrosis in my lungs, explaining the persistent chest pains I had been enduring.”
And with that poignant message, Zoleka Mandela’s voice fell silent as she embarked on her journey, #TerminallyFree.

Zoleka Mandela’s indomitable spirit and unwavering resolve will forever be etched in our hearts. She fought against insurmountable odds, illuminating the path of hope for countless souls who drew inspiration from her unwavering spirit. In her memory, we celebrate a true warrior who taught us to never surrender, no matter the trials we face.
