Makhadzi recently opened up about the financial challenges she faced in order to attend the 19th annual BET Hip-Hop Awards in Los Angeles, California after she had to borrow money from Mashonisa to attend the event. Despite winning the prestigious Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act award, she revealed the difficult circumstances she overcame for her to even attend the Award ceremony in the USA.
Borrowing to Attend the Awards
During a candid interview on Podcast and Chill, Makhadzi disclosed that she had to borrow money to cover her travel expenses. The singer, who hails from Limpopo, expressed her commitment to her career and determination to present herself as the superstar she believes she is.

“I’m going through a lot. It’s not a secret. Every money I get monthly I’m paying SARS so I end up not having money for myself,” she said. “So for me to travel I have to go to mashonisa [loan sharks]. They [my team] have to borrow money for me so I can fly business class because I have to be the superstar that I am. Because I believe in myself and my career I’m like, let me do everything and go there.”
Makhadzi’s Financial Woes with SARS
In December, Sunday World reported that Makhadzi allegedly owed the South African Revenue Service (SARS) R6.6 million. With the help of a tax consultant, this debt was reduced to R2.7 million. Makhadzi confirmed these reports and shared her ongoing efforts to repay the debt, noting how it has significantly impacted her finances.

The singer shared that her monthly earnings go towards paying off the SARS debt and she is hardly left with extra money for luxury. However the singer tries to keep up her superstar image because of her brand.
